Nine Organizations Behind Datonics’ Carbon Offset Portfolio
Over the past three years, Datonics has retired carbon offsets through Climate Impact Partners, supporting projects that span continents and causes — from forest conservation in Malawi to rooftop solar in rural India to grassland restoration in Mexico. Behind each of these offsets is an organization doing real, on-the-ground work, often with far less visibility than it deserves.
2023: Forests, Sun, Water, and Clean Air
● Kulera REDD+ and Cookstoves (Malawi) protects three national parks and wildlife reserves — home to elephant, lion, leopard, and Africa's highest concentration of roan antelope — by working with tens of thousands of households on climate-smart agriculture, village savings groups, and clean cookstoves. It was the first landscape REDD+ program in Africa to verify emission reductions under VCS.
● Five States Solar Power (VCS Project 1851) is a grouped solar program across five Indian states, feeding clean electricity into a grid still dominated by coal while creating construction and operations jobs in rural districts.
● Ecofiltro (Guatemala) distributes gravity-fed ceramic water filters and improved cookstoves to rural and peri-urban families, cutting the need to boil water over open wood fires. The program has reached well over 100,000 families and supports hundreds of local manufacturing and distribution jobs.
● GreenTrees' Mississippi Valley Reforestation (United States) is the largest reforestation carbon project in the country. It pays private landowners across the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley to replant native cottonwood and hardwood species on land that was once part of 22 million acres of bottomland hardwood forest.
2024: Soil, Solar, and Standing Forests
● Boomitra Grassland Restoration (Mexico) works with ranching communities, including community-owned ejidos, across the Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts to adopt rotational grazing practices that rebuild soil carbon and restore degraded grassland.
● Orb Energy (India) manufactures and installs rooftop solar and solar water heating systems for households and small businesses where grid power is unreliable, helping displace kerosene use.
● Darkwoods Forest Conservation, stewarded by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, is the largest private land conservation project in the country — protecting old-growth forest in British Columbia's West Kootenay region.
2025: Managed Forests, Cold Chains, and Clean Cooking
● Sierra Madre IFM (Mexico) supports community-managed pine and oak forests under the Climate Action Reserve's Mexico Forest Protocol, extending harvest rotations and funding local forestry jobs and training.
● Advanced Refrigeration Solutions (United States) helps supermarkets and cold storage facilities replace conventional refrigeration systems with low-impact alternatives — a category Project Drawdown has ranked among the highest-impact climate solutions available.
● MEC MicroEnergy Credits (India) partners with microfinance institutions to bring efficient cookstoves to low-income households, cutting fuelwood use and indoor air pollution.
